Feast for the Eyes looks particularly at how food is represented and used in photographic practises and brings together a broad-range of artists all of whom harness the history and popularity food photography to express wider themes. Crossing public and private realms the works on show evoke deep-seated questions and anxieties about issues such as wealth, poverty, consumption, appetite, tradition, gender, race, desire, pleasure, revulsion and domesticity .
Great start, Ella! With the selected images from the exhibition, explain how these fit into your theme Broken. -they don't

PHOTOGRAPHER ANALYSIS
Anthony Gerace
Anthony Gerace is a photographer that works and lives in London. He began with interests in collage which led to graphic design, which led to his current work in typography. Typography is the art and technique or arranging type to make hidden written language that is legible when displayed. These collages use old posters and rearranged them in a tile like form, which I a quite interested in exploring on photoshop but also physically with cut outs. Gerace uses old vintage posters and collages them using photoshop, his use of the background as his collage helps to emphasise the missing pieces. Gerace is interested in the effect of time on objects and images and I think the use of old posters/pictures helps to emphasise this. Gerace says "Collage is, traditionally, a medium resistant to systems". I would like to explore this form of collage also on 'old' looking pictures as I like the vintage character it adds, however I would also like to try shooting some images and creating this aged effect in photoshop, and then collaging those images. I like the use of bright backgrounds as I feel it helps add character to the images and help capture the mood of the collage e.g. calm, happy.
Can you explain a bit more about what the photographer has actually done to the images and what you like about them? What effect does the editing do to the images and what are ways that you can also explore this?

my attempts
self- evaluation
I liked these images as I feel they accurately capture the vintage affect I wanted to replicate however I was unsure on the size and placement of the collage squares for all three of my images, as I feel some of the squares are too big and look awkward on the page. I would also have liked to try and collage some images with one consistent background colour so the collage could have a better flow and help the piece look more overall put together, as I feel like the sudden/random squares of colour look messy and off centre.
Good developments - the bottom one of Breakfast at Tiffany's is my favourite. Please evaluate them.
development
intentions
I wanted to develop this shoot however as we are in lockdown I was unable to take another shoot specifically for this development so I went through my SD card and found some previously taken portraits that I thought I could apply this grid effect to. I also wanted to try applying this effect to some paintings that I thought matched the kind of theme I wanted to achieve.
Cindy Sherman
Cindy Sherman is an American artists who is commonly known for creating images presenting herself in traditional female roles, inspired by 50's and 60's Hollywood. As she uses herself as the model, she uses extreme makeup and costumes to change her appearance to fit the themes and roles of her images. I like the use of a bright but contrasting background as it draws focus to the subject without taking away from the topic and theme of the images.
intentions
For this shoot I wanted to take portraits focusing on makeup and posing to help add the emphasis on different characters eg. soft, gentler makeup with delicate poses, dark, harsh makeup with bold, confident posing. As I do not possess the capability to completely transform someone like Sherman does. I would like to achieve portraits showing two different personalities and the contrast between the two.
Provide intentions for shoot here. What are you trying to achieve?
my shoot
self evaluation
For this shoot I wanted to focus more on the makeup to help show the difference in character, and I feel that I achieved this however I would have liked to use more colourful background like Sherman did. I tried to add a colourful background in with editing however it looked harsh and unnatural. When I took the photos they were focused and sharp images however once I uploaded them into weekly they blurred, and I feel this takes away from the crispness of the portraits that really helps to define the character/personalities I wanted to capture. For a future development I would like to use multiple subjects and colourful background (maybe with hanging sheets) and really emphasise the personality differences maybe with props and further use of makeup.
And??? Were you successful? WWW? EBI? How can you further expand on this project??

Bruce Boyd
Boyd is a photographer that is based in Cape Town, he is well known for his 'frozen florals'. in order to achieve this he freezes collections of brightly coloured flowers in a tray. He then does some further small adjustments of contrast and tone in Photoshop. I like these images as there is a nice combination of delicate and harsh between the flowers that appear to be floating in the ice and the cold, hard cracks in the ice. I also like the contrast between the brightly coloured flowers, the cold, foggy ice and the black/dark background. I can see many ways in which I could develop this shoot, as I could follow his method of freezing the flowers in ice and then drop the ice onto a canvas creating shards of ice, which is more fitting to the 'broken' theme.
Explain how he produces this work? Does he do further editing in Photoshop? Please expand on this. What about the work do you like (besides what you could do to use it?) What are some ideas that you have that will fit the Broken theme with these?

intentions
I would like to try and shoot flowers before and after being crushed, as I would like to gradually develop these shoots until I reach images like Boyd's.

development
intentions
For this shoot, as I have decided I do not want to progress with this strand, I wanted to try and shoot a more accurate representation of Boyd's work with the frozen flowers.

self-evaluation
I quite like the way these photos came out, however I would have liked to try developing this shoot in a way that represents the theme of 'Broken'. e.g smashing the ice. Once again weebly unfocused these images, which takes away from the crispness that the close up shoot gives.
Ok, Ella - you've made a good start on this first part of your work. However, there are already two shoots/projects missing from your favourite strand from before the pandemic struck London so I'm concerned that you've already fallen behind before school was finished. Although we've given you your coursework marks, we will be basing our Teachers' Assessment on the work you produce for your exam project, as well, so your grade could actually go down if you do not continue working at GCSE Photography. I know this is a really difficult time for everyone but it will be best for you to have a focus during what looks like a very extended period of time out of school, physically. Please let me know if you have any questions. I want to see you do the very best you can in this subject - you're really capable!
